Walking the West Mendip Way

I just spent a wonderful weekend walking with my sister in the Mendips. We had two precious days and walked from Wells to Western-super Mare via Cheddar. We followed the West Mendip way, which is way marked most of the way.
It was a glorious walk and we were even lucky enough to have sunshine on our first day, enabling us to stop and picnic and enjoy the warming sun.

We were dropped off in Wells on Saturday at about 11am and we managed to find our way out and reached Cheddar by about 4pm. We stayed in a cosy shepherd hut just off our route and enjoyed taking our boots off and eating the huge pie we had brouhgt with us!
The next day we et off about 9am and heading for Cheddar gorge. It was a real treat to walk the gorge as it was pretty impressive, even in the drizzle. At this point we were using our OS map and a compass as the route is quite tricky to pick up again, but we managed to find it and headed for Draycot and then over the hills and onto Western.
We arrived at our destination (which was a spa hotel!) at about 4pm- with rather stiff legs, but a reviving sauna and a tasty supper, with great company soon made everything feel good again.
If you are interested in walking the West Mendip Way, I would highly recommend it as a two day walk, as it so varied, passing through villages, woodland and of course the Gorge with its stunning views. If you want to find out more please follow this link West Mendip Way
